SquareWell Partners is pleased to share that we were featured in a recent Hankyung article by journalist Shin Min-kyung, following our joint seminar with Yulchon LLC. The seminar brought together legal experts, corporate leaders, governance specialists, and global investors to discuss how companies should respond to the rapidly evolving expectations within Korea’s capital markets. As highlighted by Hankyung, Korea’s ongoing reforms—including revisions to the Commercial Act—are reshaping the landscape of corporate governance and increasing the emphasis on transparency, accountability, and long-term value creation.
Throughout the seminar, speakers underscored that investor trust begins with transparent governance and open communication. While recent reforms have laid important groundwork, many foreign investors noted that Korean companies still appear cautious and closed in their engagement with the market. Representatives from institutions such as IMPAX Asset Management, Federated Hermes, and Glass Lewis emphasized that proactive dialogue from senior management—not just IR teams—is crucial to building confidence among global investors.
SquareWell Partners’ Andrew Brady participated in the panel discussions, sharing insights on how governance-driven investor expectations have influenced corporate behavior in markets like Japan, and how similar approaches can guide Korean companies as shareholder engagement continues to accelerate.
The final session, featuring Professor Jung Joon-hyuk of Seoul National University School of Law and Seth Fischer of Oasis Management, explored how active shareholder participation can play a defining role in enhancing long-term corporate value and shaping Korea’s governance landscape going forward.
As Hankyung reported, the message was clear: in uncertain times, transparent and meaningful governance practices are central to strengthening trust.
