Danone unveiled a plan to become the first listed company in France that is a so-called “entreprise à mission”. The move taps into a growing trend for companies including Philip Morris International and the Swedish private equity firm EQT to define their corporate purpose, as politicians and the public call on businesses to deliver more than just profits as the coronavirus pandemic wreaks havoc across the world.

In Financial Times’s weekly Moral Money publication, SquareWell’s survey of investors with $22.1tn in assets under management was referrenced. Alex Edmans, professor of finance at London Business School, who wrote the Forward for SquareWell’s survey said: “While business reformers have argued that purpose can only become a reality if we tear up shareholder primacy and shackle investors’ rights, investors are not the enemy but partners in the repurposing of business.”
