UN PRI in Person 2023: Moving From Commitments to Action

SquareWell representatives attended the UN PRI in Person event in Tokyo, Japan 01 October 2023 UN PRI in Person 2023: Moving From Commitments to Action

PRI in Person 2023 brought together nearly 1,400 investment professionals. The theme of this year’s event was ‘moving from commitments to action’.

Over three days in Tokyo, across nearly 40 conference sessions and 50 side events, speakers and delegates came together to learn, network and share knowledge on the latest responsible investment trends, challenges and opportunities.

Some key sessions included:

  • Just Economic Transition: The transition to a low carbon economy has profound implications for the global economy. The transition is also urgent: economic growth, and financial returns, rely on the viability of social and environmental systems, many of which are under threat. The transition needs to work for markets and for people, and socially just, taking into account the needs of workers and affected communities. This session will discuss the need for a whole-of-government approach to drive the economic transition, and how investors can support and benefit from an effective, ambitious transition to net zero.
  • Climate and Nature: We are facing a planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution, which presents physical, transition and systemic risk for investors. The net zero transition is now more urgent than ever if we are to stabilize maximum warming at 1.5C by 2100. Limiting global warming is also important for halting and reversing biodiversity loss. This session will review the current state of the net-zero emissions transition, including the latest scientific understanding of delayed action, the forces driving shifts in the energy system, as well as the increasing imperative to reduce emissions and build climate resilience through the conservation and restoration of nature. How can investors sharpen their net zero strategies based on the latest science on delayed climate action? How can they think about nature in accelerating their net zero transition and building resilience to climate impacts? What actions should they prioritise now?
